Economic Impact

Urban waterfronts in the Coos region offer exciting opportunities for community-based redevelopment and urban revitalization.   Many industries have relocated to larger, more remote sites, and a range of pedestrian-oriented waterfront uses are now possible.

The new Coos Historical & Maritime Museum complex will be the "flagship" of such redevelopment.  The site, directly accessible from Highway 101, is a gateway to Front Street, where tugboats and barges can form a colorful backdrop for strolling and shopping.  The museum plaza, with outdoor exhibits, markets, festivals, and other cultural events, will help redefine the waterfront, attract new visitors to the region and invite exploration of the entire county.

Programs

Specific museum programs supported by the new facility include

  • Educational forums with guest lecturers;
  • School programs (involving all Coos County school districts);
  • Photo and archive library and research desks;
  • Author nights; and
  • Collaborative programs and shared services with other area museums.

Key new features include a meeting room for presentations and school classes, a research library and archive, atrium and reception space, and excellent climate control and collections storage.
